Angie was enjoying a great pregnancy, and was looking forward to 2.5 week holiday before the momentous occasion (maybe a little longer if Samantha was late!).
This particular saturday afternoon was just like any other day in Melbourne for this time of the year - overcast and quite warm; We had been invited to see a children's play "Wind in the Willows" and enjoy a picnic at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens by our friends John & Margaret (& Junior).
We were led around the Gardens as different scenes of the "Wind in the Willows" were played out. Early on, the Rabbit was fast making friends with the audience, but the Rabbit was also hungry, and stole some of Angie's yummy salad to keep him going.
The rain came and went just as quickly as is typical of Melbourne weather and the play continued on with great gusto .... Now it was time for audience participation and for the kids to run off and have some fun on their own. From the classy audience, one person was selected to play the part of the General - I wonder who it's going to be? ... Searching the crowd for a suitable person, the finger was pointed at Allan! He was provided with a General's Hat and spent 5 minutes basking in the glory of being on stage. Comments from the crowd afterward indicated that Allan had played his part very well indeed!
Well, things were looking great and Al was enjoying an over-inflated ego. Mmmm, I wonder if the golf game scheduled for tommorrow is going to be a success as well. Meanwhile, Samantha had ideas of her own. It was time to join the world. By eleven o'clock that evening there was no denying it - the moment that we had been waiting for had finally arrived. Remembering our pregnancy classes we stayed at home to bear out the first few hours. But by 2:30, Angie had had enough and was whisked off to the hospital.
At 8:47am, Sunday the 27th of January, a beautiful baby girl "Samantha Lauren Charteris" was born - the words to the song "a little ray of sunshine" come to mind!
